I made a cute little card with a pull tab as our son’s birth announcement. As you pull the tab, he floats down from the stork’s grasp and flips his diaper up into a parachute for a soft landing.

In addition to the obvious whimsy in the concept, I thought the peculiar use of a #10 business envelope for a greeting card was fun and unexpected once it was opened – although I’m probably the only person who actually had any feeling about the aspect ratio or envelope format. Paper geeks.

It looks really hard to make this card.
Could you explain how you made the movement posible of the daiper/parachute?

Hello Annalouise. Glad you liked this. The card isn’t really difficult to assemble. The tough part is all in the design process. There is a hidden track inside that allows the character to travel in one position on a delay. When it meets its internal limit, a tab attached to the piece is forced to turn around causing the diaper to reorient itself and become a parachute. Hope that helps a bit.

I’m hoping to have some of my cards (including this one) ready to sell directly through the website soon. In the meantime, I do create custom work in small runs for clients. Thanks for your interest in my work!

Can you please clarify more on how the diaper turns up and becomes parachute?

I’m glad you enjoyed this card with the fun pull-tab mechanic. There is a lot you can do with pull tabs, pivots, tracks, tabs in slots, etc. I haven’t been able to put the time into doing a tutorial for this particular design and I’d like to first explore the idea of selling this card in an Etsy shop sometime soon. In the meantime, if you want to experiment with this concept, think of pivoting tabs traveling through slots positioned in a way to control their movement. Sorry if that is too vague. I’ll try to make more of these and get an Etsy shop together soon! Thanks.
